Did Stardock ever release those "patches included" Elemental archival DVDs?
Published on April 2, 2011 By ebenezercrunch In War of Magic

One of the reasons I bought Elemental is because of a post from Brad (I believe) promising they'd release "archival DVDs" of Elemental every so often, so you'd have all the latest patches built in and ready to slip into your big fat Limited Edition box.

Was an Elemental archive DVD released yet, and if so, how can I go about getting my hands on one?

Thanks much,

Don't recall anything ever being said about it, you could try emailing support@stardock.com and asking them. TBH with the amount of stuff that was talked about for Elemental that never materialized, I wouldn't get my hopes up too far.

What you can do is go to Impulse Anywhere, grab the archive, and make a disk yourself.

I'm pretty sure I remember that they indicated that you'd have to request the archival DVDs.  Not sure if there was a cost associated with that.

Probably not much point in them issuing one until 1.3 is done.  Anyway, I expect they'll announce when one is ready.

I think they weren't supposed to even start until 1 yr after release.

Is there any news on this?

I'm especially interested now that Impulse Anywhere seems to have disappeared.

Having lost my internet access, there's no way to get Elemental on my PC. I can't go to a friend's house, log on Anywhere, burn the files to DVD, go home and install it there.

I suspect that any archival disks will have to wait until Stardock does self-distribution aggain.

One idea/suggestion: if the disks ever happen, maybe set up some sort of military program for folks on deployment.  I think it would be a good idea, as Stardock games are well-suited for troops on deployment.  (at least the guys in the rear)  maybe work out something with the USO or AAFES?

Sounds like a great idea to me! Digital distribution is great, but just like an old paperback has some advantages over a Kindle, it's nice to be able to gift a hard copy of a game to a loved one who is unable to download games online.

Can't wait for the day when there are no books. We have to retitle "Fahrenheit 451" to  "Small Puddle of Water." At least the firemen part will be less confusing.

Impulse Anywhere disappeared? Oh hey, so it did. Seems like a mistake, that was a good feature. I guess you can't expect much else from Gamestop.

Still don't expect much in the area of the archive disks, I think my april comment stands on that one.

This is something they said they'd do. They can't just back out now because they feel like it.

I agree.  Even if they have to integrate with Impulse, they can and are obligated to make at least a 1.40 archival disc because they made it clear to all that they would make an archival disc.  It is essential for this disc to be produced if Stardock is to continue to be known as a company that keeps its promises.

Best regards,
Steven.

Is there a link for this?  I don't remember this being mentioned unless I totally missed it.

So here is what we’re going to start doing on our developed titles: We’re going to start making archival DVD versions of the game that can be sent to customers.  We already do this with Object Desktop (our most popular non-game product).  This archival version would have no copy protection whatsoever. It would just be a DVD you can put into your machine.

So starting in October, what we will do is make archival DVD editions of our games starting with Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition and Elemental.  Roughly every year or so, if there have been updates, we’ll create a new archival version of the game that people can have sent to them (it’ll just be a DVD).

There was some hoser in Italy that made a big fuss about updates so Brad said they would mail CDs to those people. I find it hilarious.

I don't think it's a bad idea to do this service, at a fair cost.  I don't think it will be used that much though.

I can think of some folks who would benefit- namely deployed troops.  (I'd suggest a promotional campaign with the exchanges personally, free update discs to folks overseas in return to price space in their exchanges and reviews in the Army/Navy/Air Force times.

A lot of military folks like TBS and are retail shoppers (unless that's changed recently)
